Logos Books to close in January 2017

wendyweitzelwThe owners of the not-for-profit bookstore Logos Books, 513 Second St., are retiring, and plan to close their store when their lease expires at the end of January. Though the store is one of the properties recently acquired by Browman Development Company, the bookstore owners insist it has nothing to do with the change in landlords.

Susan Linz owns Logos Books with her husband, Peter, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday.

“We’re getting older. It’s harder to pick up books and haul them about,” she said.

The bookstore opened in 2010, specializing in used and out-of-print books. It’s staffed by volunteers, with all profits going to charities. Through 2015, it has raised more than $250,000 for its two beneficiaries, Save the Children and Doctors Without Borders.

“We feel really good about what we’ve done,” Linz said. “We want to convey how much we have appreciated the support of the community, our wonderful volunteers, and we really would hope that if anyone was interest in having a second-hand bookstore, they would contact us.”

She noted that Santa Cruz supports two used bookstores, and it’d be a shame if Davis no longer had one.

Linz met Wednesday with Jim Stephens, director of leasing and development for Browman, and “it sounded like they were interested in keeping us. He seemed very sincere, and interested in the vibrancy of downtown Davis.”

She said the company is still in the process of assessing the terms of Logos’ next lease, which would begin in February. Under the current lease, negotiated under former owner John Brinley, they pay a little over $2 per square foot. That would definitely go up, but “not catastrophically,” she said.

The owners notified their store volunteers on Wednesday. They were hesitant to make a public announcement, however, worried that it would hurt sales.

“It’s business as usual until (the end of January). We don’t want people to think we’ve already closed,” Linz said.
